THE VESSEL OF UNKNOWN KNOWLEDGE

fandomless original character

SHE IS KNOWN AS THE VESSEL;

The vessel is a feminine, humanoid entity that wields both knowledge and the arcane as simple tools. A tall figure, her skin is like that of a corpse. Her hair is a mint green, though grows lighter toward the ends. Commonly, the vessel is seen wearing an unusual visor, matched with a flowing dress, heels, and finger-less gloves. Her lips are permanently stained a deep black. None have seen what lies beneath the visor. If anyone has, no one has dared speak of it, or have not lived to speak of it.

However, some have given her the name of 'Persephone'.

THE VESSEL AND HOW SHE ACTS;

Despite her otherwise eerie, or intimidating appearance, the vessel herself is a curious and friendly entity. Intrigued with the idea of what the difference between 'living' and 'surviving' is, questions of philosophy are often posed to those that come into her domain. Her questions, though intrusive, mean no harm as she aims to learn about things she cannot otherwise read about. At times, her curiosity and intrusion upon people's personal beliefs and space often gives her the aura of the fae, rather than the haunting entity that she otherwise is.

It is only when the book is threatened. Then, the entity is a dangerous one.

THE BOOK;

The book is a piece of knowledge. Knowledge of the arcane; of life and death and it's complexities. Of rebirth and sacrifice. Of the soul and it's journey. How everything can die but everything can also be immortal. The whispers of the shadows to the songs of the light. What is truth and what is a falsehood. The book has details on the everything and the nothing. The book is everything.

The book is the book.

The vessel has dedicated her entire life to the book, and both it's preservation and it's secrecy. The book must survive in order for the truth to be delivered and for the falsehood to be annihilated, yet the book must also remain intact for the time when everyone is ready to read the absolute. Too early and the truth can drive someone mad. Too late and it's power will never be realized.

The book is the book.

She remembers nothing before her life was dedicated to the book. It's presence has always been there. Her duty has always been to protect it. Or has it? She cannot remember. Time became something that was no longer counted, and every footstep was with the purpose of protecting a knowledge that the world was not ready for. The truth that meant everything seen was tainted by falsehood. All that matters is knowledge. All that matters is the arcane. All that matters is protection and secrecy.

All that matters is the book.

THE WOODLAND AND THE SPIRE;

The woodlands are deep and dark. Each tree is something of a silhouette against the sky, painting a haunting scene across an already dark canvas. And yet, as gravely as it may be, the woodland itself is tranquil. It is a somewhat comforting darkness, like the darkness that descends when someone is about to sleep.

As deep as the woodlands may be, there are a few notable places which it keeps; the lake, the circle, the ruins, and the spire.

The lake is the most tranquil place of all. The vessel, upon occasion, can be seem swimming in it's silent waters. It appears to be a place of absolute peace, with the only other life to disturb the otherwise lifeless scene being fireflies that dance above the water's surface.

The circle is a large opening in the middle of the forest. It has a wide circumference, and spans wide. Around the edge of the circle, giant leucopax have grown and killed the grass within; or at least that is the explanation that has been given. There are rumors that it is both a hazardous place, and a place of great fortune. Time seems to stand still in a place like it.

Not much is known about the ruins. Toppled stones and scorched floors where life refuses to grow, leaving an eternal scar on the landscape. It's original purpose lost to time, the vessel now uses it as something of a training ground for her own capabilities.

The spire is where the vessel dwells; considered her home. Attached to the spire is a house, yet seeing no reason to remain in there, as well as no value, she never steps inside. It is old, derelict, and covered within a layer of thick dust. Yet, judging by furniture and paintings which have now gone into a state of rot and decay, it was once a family home. But all of the paintings have been scarred and tarnished.

The spire itself consists of a lonely, spiralling staircase upward. The first floor contains books on history, and the second contains books on magic. The top floor contains the book that the vessel must protect, with it encased in a large, black cage, the iron encased in thorns as if a rose bush. A single light descends on the book, and it remains closed until the time is right.

THE ABILITIES OF THE VESSEL;

To protect the book, the vessel has grown into something of a weapon. Nimble and agile, matched with her vast knowledge of the arcane and death, the vessel is nothing short of a formidable opponent. Though, she will only unleash true hell upon those that attempt to deface, harm, or claim the book.

NameCapabilities
Psychic VampirismHow the vessel 'feeds'; by taking the energy from another being. If she does feed from another, she will be left feeling revitalized while her target feels exhausted. This can occur through the vessel biting another person, or other forms of strong physical contact - e.g. strangulation or other close, intimate moments. It will not kill another person, but can leave them chronically fatigued if she feeds for long enough.
Arcane MagicA powerful form of magic. It manifests in the form of green light, and has the ability to burn and scar another person. It forms in the vessel's hands, either through orbs, flames, or beams and beacons of light. Using it for extended amounts of time can cause a necessary energy refill, though the vessel herself has adapted to using this intensive force over time.
Arcane PhysicalizationUsing the arcane to instead manifest physical objects, though it still contains the same unusual green glow. Commonly, the vessel uses this manifestation technique to create blades, weapons, or change the landscape of the battlefield (e.g. caging an opponent in). The objects can be broken with enough physical force.
Tortured SoulsDamned souls are brought to her and become her aids in battle. Their physicality comes in the form of floating green skulls, or sometimes, screaming heads. They aim to terrorize, confuse, and sometimes even bite/eat her opponents alive. Though, they are only the heads, thus opponents are not held down (unless by the vessel herself). Like the physicalization, enough force can break the head and break the soul's physical form.
Shadow ManipulationThe ability to manipulate the shadows and where they cast. Unlike the energy of the arcane, this cannot be manipulated into a physical entity. Rather, the shadows are used to obscure certain places and leave an opponent in the dark, or are used as a method of transportation. It is how the vessel moves between the shadows so efficiently; they act almost like portals for her.
ReanimationThe ability to reanimate dead beings and plants to do her biding. For example, if the skull of a soul is broken, the vessel can piece together the skull and reanimate in any way of her choosing, however only using her own energy. If the reanimated entity is broken, her energy is expelled and released and does not return to her.
ReattachmentThe ability to reattach limbs to her body after they have been removed. Works for as long as the wound is still open and otherwise bleeding. If the wound is sealed the limb cannot be reattached.
Ritual MagicThe practice of magic through rituals. Rather than doing this in battle, this practice takes place to help others when the vessel isn't present. The vessel takes the time to conduct rituals to help through health, stamina, or whatever else her ally needs. Similar to a prayer, however done herself.

RELATIONSHIPS OF THE VESSEL;

Makoto Takahashi
❝Your time is not yet, Makoto. Stop joking about your death.❞

The first one who came to visit her in the forest. Her first friend, so to speak - the one that was so kind as to give her the name of "Persephone". Makoto often visits the forest in order to have a moment of peace and tranquility, and Persephone will always be there to listen to whatever troubles the man was having. In this life, and the next.

Ren Chang
❝Remember, darling. There is no weakness in requiring my assistance.❞

A man of intelligence and quick thinking, what struck the vessel immediately about Ren was their conversation. The two spoke of multiple topics, upon the multiple times Ren would visit the forest, and slowly she grew exceptionally fond of this individual. She knows not of what the future holds for them, but she enjoys each moment he comes to visit.

Aidoneus
❝Will your story be a tragedy? Or will it be an epic of the ages?❞

An individual she would not say is the closest of friends, however, the vessel finds his story most interesting. A demigod in the modern day, seeking revenge yet also having to seek the means to do so. She eagerly anticipates how his narrative will later unfold.

Erwin Longfellow
❝Sometimes, the things you wish to discover have already found you.❞

An unusual man, she thought. He seeks knowledge of things mortals should never, truly, discover; the truth, the darkness, the ancients and the arts. She finds this man's obsession concerning, however, curious as to just how much he can discover, and how much he can truly handle.
